- The ceremony doesn't have to be on Saturday. Choose a date special to your family - perhaps the anniversary of the bride's parents or the birthday of the oldest relative.
- Formal white is only one option for invitations. Card stores and print shops have lots of colorful ideas - be creative.
- A pen for each groomsman and a necklace for each bridesmaid are fallback ideas for gifts. Get them something that lasts beyond the wedding day, like personalized pub glasses or purses.
- If looking for gowns has been overwhelming, get out of the bridal shops and into the dress departments. No law says a gown must be floor length and still be elegant, especially if the bride is a little less formal herself.

- Dad doesn't have to escort the bride down the aisle, especially if he's not a part of the bride's life. Ask someone special.
- The reading, whether scripture or poetry, can reflect the couple's outlook on life or their culture and ethnicity.
- Writing your own vows is the ultimate in customization. Ask your minister or other official about the possibilities.

- Not into clinking glasses for toasts? give guests a small bell to ring. The bells also can be rung when the bride and groom make their exit from the reception.
- If you always liked cupcakes as a kid give guests individually decorated cakes for the occasion or place cupcakes on several tiers to mimic a traditional cake.
